An educator would like to assess the effectiveness of a new
instructional program for reading. The control group consists of
n = 4 second-grade students who are provided with the
traditional instruction used at the school. Another sample of
n = 4 second graders receives the experimental
instruction. The subjects in the experimental group are matched
one-to-one with the subjects in the control group, based on their
reading achievement test scores from the previous year. After six
months, both groups are tested with a standard reading exam. The
data are as follows:
Matched Pair
Control
Experimental
A
10
12
B
15
25
C
13
15
D
18
20
On the basis of these data, can the educator conclude that the
special program has a significant effect on reader scores? Test at
the .05 level.
